Yule Marble

Yule Marble faces the Lincoln Memorial and forms the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is quarried in the Colorado Rockies outside a town called Marble, from galleries driven into a mountain between 9,000 and 10,000 feet, and it is around 99.5% calcite, which is why it is as white as it is.

A young marble made from a much older limestone

The rock that became Yule Marble is the Leadville Limestone, a Mississippian carbonate laid down roughly 340 million years ago. The marble itself is far younger. Around 34 million years ago a granitic magma body, the Treasure Mountain dome, intruded beside it, and the heat recrystallized the limestone in place. That is contact metamorphism: no continental collision, just a very hot neighbor.

The gap is the interesting part. The marble is about a tenth the age of the limestone it is made from. What makes it valuable is what the original limestone lacked rather than what the metamorphism added: the Leadville carbonate here was exceptionally clean, so there were almost no impurities to streak the recrystallized stone. Purity in, whiteness out.

At around 99.5% calcite it is one of the purest marbles worked anywhere, and the finest grades carry so little veining that they read as a solid white rather than as a patterned stone.

The two jobs everyone knows

The Lincoln Memorial. The exterior is Yule Marble, and the association is close enough that the United States Geological Survey published a bulletin titled Colorado Yule Marble: Building Stone of the Lincoln Memorial. Blocks were cut in Colorado and shipped east.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, completed in 1931. The main body of the tomb was cut from a single block weighing about 56 tons, which was a record at the time and remains the reason the monument reads as one continuous piece of stone rather than an assembly.

Those two commissions did something unusual for an American stone: they made it a national material rather than a regional one, in a way that a Colorado quarry three days from anywhere had no other route to.

The quarry, and why it is hard

The deposit sits above the upper Crystal River Valley outside the town of Marble, Colorado, at 9,000 to 10,000 feet. It was found in the 1870s, opened in 1886, and developed seriously from 1905. It then closed and reopened repeatedly across the twentieth century, which is the normal biography of a remote high-altitude quarry.

It was acquired and reopened in 2011 and now works year-round from underground galleries, the Lincoln and the Hamilton, driven into the mountain. A surface pit, the Franklin, runs only in the warmer months. Extraction uses diamond wire and chain saws with vertical drilling to section the face into benches.

Two things follow for a buyer. Underground working is why supply is now steadier than the quarry's history would suggest. And the seasonal surface pit is a real scheduling constraint: if your material comes off the Franklin, winter is not the time to be ordering it.

Specifying it

It is a marble, with everything that implies. Calcite at Mohs 3 to 4 etches from acids. Lemon juice, vinegar and wine will dull a polished surface, exactly as they do on Carrara. On a kitchen worktop that is a maintenance decision rather than a defect, and the same one Tennessee Pink Marble asks you to make.

Whiteness is the reason to choose it, so if the specification calls for movement and veining, this is the wrong stone and an Italian marble is probably the right one. The domestic argument is the reverse: a near-pure white marble quarried in Colorado is a far shorter supply chain than a near-pure white marble quarried in Tuscany.

Applications

Monuments and memorials: the historic core of its use, and the reason it is known at all.

Civic and institutional cladding: white, uniform, and with a century of precedent on federal buildings.

Interior floors and wall panels: where the low veining does the work and no acid gets near it.

Countertops and vanity tops: available, and a domestic alternative to imported white marble, with the etching caveat above.

Sculpture and carving: the purity and even grain are what carvers want, and the town hosts a stone carving symposium because of it.

Heritage restoration: matching work on the federal buildings above has to come from this valley.
