Texas limestone is not one stone. It is a trade term covering at least three separate quarrying belts, laid down in two geological periods around 175 million years apart, and the stones behave differently enough that the name on a pallet tells you very little on its own. Within a single operation's six limestones, compressive strength runs from 2,251 psi to 7,500 psi. That is a factor of more than three, between stones sold under the same two words.

Three belts, two periods

West Texas, around Garden City in Glasscock County. Permian limestone, quarried and cut by one family operation working sixteen quarries. This is where the unusual colors come from: a taupe that polishes, an off-white full of shell, and two pinks.

North-central Texas, around the town of Lueders. The Lueders Formation is early Permian, of Leonardian age, and sits at the top of the Albany Group. It is the belt that produced most of the cream-colored civic building in Fort Worth and Dallas. Covered in full in the Texas Lueders Limestone entry.

Central Texas, around Austin. Cordova Cream and Cordova Shell come from the Lower Cretaceous Edwards Formation, roughly 100 to 105 million years old, quarried from a lens of white stone sitting on top of it. The two are worth telling apart: Cordova Cream is oolitic and almost fossil-free, while Cordova Shell is packed with visible rudists, the reef-building clams of the Cretaceous. Same quarry, same age, completely different face.

So a specification that says only "Texas limestone" has not narrowed anything down. It has named a state.

What the numbers say

The West Texas quarries publish ASTM results for all six of their limestones, which makes them the clearest illustration of how wide the category is.

All six have passed 100 cycles of freeze-thaw testing, which matters more than the raw strength figures for anyone building north of the state.

Permian Sea Coral is the outlier and the one to reach for when the stone has to work: it is the densest, the strongest by a wide margin, and the only one of the six that takes a genuine high-gloss polish.

How to read those numbers

Absorption is the figure that decides exteriors. These limestones sit between 4.47% and 7.79%. For comparison, Stony Creek Granite measures 0.19%, roughly twenty-five times less. That gap is the whole difference between a stone you can put on a sea wall and a stone you should keep out of standing water. Texas limestone is not a bad stone; it is a different class of material, and it wants detailing that sheds water rather than holding it.

Mohs 3 to 4 means it etches. Every limestone here is calcite. Vinegar, lemon juice, wine and most bathroom cleaners will dull a polished or honed surface. On a kitchen worktop that is a maintenance decision, not a defect, and it is the same decision Carrara asks you to make.

The pinks are genuinely unusual. The quarry describes TexaStone Pink as the only pink limestone in North America. Desert Sunset, from the same operation, also runs pink through rose to orange, so treat the claim as being about the pure consistent color rather than the presence of pink. Either way, an architect looking for a warm stone that is not a marble and not a sandstone has very few domestic options, and this is one of them.

Where it works

Exterior cladding and ashlar: the historic core of the category, and the reason so much of Texas civic and commercial architecture is cream-colored. Specify by named grade, not by "Texas limestone", and detail the copings and sills to throw water clear.

Window sills, dressings and surrounds: the stone cuts and carves cleanly at Mohs 3 to 4, which is exactly why it was the default for detailed work before power tools were common.

Fireplace surrounds and hearths: warm color, easy to work, no foot abrasion.

Pool coping and patios: standard practice across Texas. Watch the absorption figures in a freeze-thaw climate, and note that all six West Texas grades are tested to 100 cycles.

Interior floors and feature walls: the polished grades, particularly Permian Sea Coral, hold a surface indoors where nothing is grinding grit into them.

Civic and institutional work: the category's home ground, and the reason the supply chain is geared to matched-batch orders rather than single pallets.
