Berea sandstone has had three careers. It was first valued for sharpening knives, then for building most of nineteenth-century Cleveland, and it is now the rock the petroleum industry uses as a reference standard in laboratory core testing. One property explains all three: it is remarkably uniform.

Grit, then buildings, then laboratories

1833. John Baldwin found sandstone near Berea, Ohio with unusual knife-sharpening qualities. It got called Berea grit, and he set up a lathe to cut grindstones from it. Abrasiveness was the first commercial property anyone cared about.

The building trade followed. The Cleveland Stone Co. was formed from several smaller operations in 1886, and merged with Ohio Quarries and Ohio Cut Stone in 1929 to become Cleveland Quarries. The quarries at Berea and Amherst shipped building stone across the United States, and the area around Berea took to calling itself the Sandstone Center of the World.

Then the laboratories. Because the rock is a clean quartz sandstone with consistent pore structure, it turned out to be an excellent stand-in for an oil reservoir. Cleveland Quarries states that for the past thirty years its Berea Sandstone core samples have been "widely recognized by the petroleum industry as the best stone for testing the efficiency of chemical surfactants". It is now a control sample: the rock other rocks are measured against.

Very few building stones end up as scientific instruments.

The geology, and the argument about its age

Berea sandstone is a fine-grained quartz sandstone. The grains are "predominantly sand-sized and are composed of quartz held together by silica", with dolomite, further quartz and siderite appearing as cements in different parts of the formation.

Its age is genuinely contested, which is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly. It was long assigned to the Lower Mississippian. Palynomorph microfossils then indicated a Famennian, latest Devonian age. The formation appears to straddle the Devonian and Mississippian boundary at roughly 360 million years ago, and different sources will give you either answer depending on which evidence they weight.

Porosity is the whole story, and it cuts both ways

The property that makes Berea valuable in a laboratory is the property a specifier has to think hardest about on a building.

Research-grade Berea typically runs 15 to 20% porosity, with permeability that varies widely by grade. Cleveland Quarries sells its core stock by permeability band:

For a petroleum engineer, high porosity and permeability are exactly the point: it behaves like a reservoir. For a building, the same numbers mean the stone takes up water, so it wants detailing that sheds water rather than traps it, and it wants respect in a freeze-thaw climate. Northern Ohio is a freeze-thaw climate, and the stone has been standing there for a century and a half, so this is a detailing problem rather than a disqualification.

The contrast with Stony Creek Granite is the clearest way to hold the scale in mind. That granite absorbs 0.19% by weight. A sandstone at 15 to 20% porosity is a fundamentally different material, and the two belong in different places on a building.

What it looks like

Even-toned buff and pale gray, fine-grained, with very little of the banding or movement a Yorkstone or a Pennant would show. Birmingham Buff, quarried from a separate Cleveland Quarries property, is the warmer grade.

Its weathering behavior is worth knowing: it goes softly gray rather than darkening, which is why nineteenth-century Cleveland reads pale rather than sooty in a way that many Victorian industrial cities do not.

Two practical notes. Say which you are buying, because building stone and core stock are sold on completely different specifications from the same rock.
