Travertine vs limestone: what actually separates them
Travertine is a limestone. Both are calcium carbonate, both sit at Mohs 3 to 4, and both are damaged by acid. The difference is how they formed, and everything practical follows from that: limestone settled slowly on a sea floor and is dense and even; travertine precipitated fast at a spring and is full of cavities.
For a buyer that comes down to three things. Travertine is cooler underfoot and grippier, which is why it dominates pool decks in hot states. Limestone is denser and takes a crisper edge, which is why it wins on steps, coping and heavy indoor traffic. And they cost within a couple of dollars a square foot of each other, so price will not decide it.
The comparison pages disagree with each other
Before the detail, a warning about the sources. Search this question and the first page returns stone retailers, paving contractors and two Australian suppliers, and they do not agree.
One ranking page says travertine is slightly harder than limestone. Another says limestone is the harder-wearing of the two. A widely cited Reddit answer explains that limestone forms “when great heat and pressure are applied”, which describes marble, not limestone. The AI summary above the results repeats the more confident of these claims without noting that the sources conflict.
The one genuinely independent source ranking on that page is the Natural Stone Institute, whose consumer guidance states plainly that travertine “is really a type of limestone”, the terrestrial form as opposed to marine formations. That is the correct framing and the rest of this guide follows it.

How each one forms, and why it matters
Limestone is a marine sedimentary rock. Shell, coral and carbonate mud accumulate on a sea floor over millions of years and compact into rock. The result is dense, relatively uniform, and often full of visible fossil fragments. Indiana limestone, the stone of the Empire State Building and the Pentagon, is the American benchmark.
Travertine is a freshwater chemical precipitate. Groundwater saturated with dissolved calcium carbonate emerges at a hot spring or cave mouth, degasses, and drops its carbonate load layer on layer. It builds quickly in geological terms, and the gas escaping through the setting carbonate leaves the cavities that define the material.
That is the whole story. Same chemistry, different architecture. Travertine’s holes and banding are not a defect in the stone; they are the record of how it was made.

Cost, from our own data rather than an impression
The common claim that limestone is the more expensive of the two does not survive contact with installed prices. In the found.rocks US cost guide, the pavers land here:

Two dollars a square foot separates the midpoints. On a 300 square foot deck that is a rounding error against the difference a good installer makes.
Where cost does diverge is sourcing. Travertine on the US market is imported, mostly from Denizli in Turkey and historically from Tivoli near Rome, so its delivered price moves with freight and exchange rates. Limestone is quarried domestically in Indiana, Texas, Kansas and elsewhere, so a Midwest or Texas buyer is often paying far less freight on limestone than on travertine. Ask both suppliers what portion of the quote is delivery.
Where travertine genuinely wins
Heat. A pale, porous carbonate absorbs less solar radiation and holds less heat than a denser, darker stone. On a Phoenix or Tampa pool surround walked on barefoot in August, that is not a marginal preference, it is the deciding factor.
Wet grip. Brushed and tumbled finishes have real texture, and the open cavities interrupt the water film. Travertine around a pool in a textured finish performs well.
Character. The banding and cavities give a surface with visible depth. Filled and honed travertine reads as a formal floor; unfilled and tumbled reads rustic. One material, two very different rooms.
Working cost. It cuts easily and takes bullnose and coping detail without difficulty, which keeps fabrication cost down on complicated layouts.
Where limestone genuinely wins
Density and traffic. Marine limestone is more uniform and less porous. In a commercial entrance, a busy kitchen or a hallway, it wears more evenly than travertine.
Edges. Crisp arrises on steps, coping and sills hold better in a dense stone. Travertine’s cavities can break out along an edge.
Freeze. In climates that cross zero repeatedly, water sitting in travertine’s cavities freezes and expands. Limestone is not immune, but it is the safer of the two on exposed horizontal surfaces in a cold state.
Consistency. If you need forty square metres to look like one material rather than a collection of related ones, limestone delivers that more readily.
Local supply. For most of the country, limestone is the domestic option. Indiana limestone in particular has a documented technical record going back over a century.
What neither of them tolerates
Acid. Both are calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate reacts with acid. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine, tomato and several common bathroom cleaners will etch the surface. Etching is not staining: it is a physical change to the stone, so it does not wipe off and it does not respond to a stronger cleaner.
On a kitchen counter that matters a great deal. On a pool deck it rarely does. Use a pH-neutral cleaner on both stones, and seal both on schedule.
Anyone selling you either material as maintenance-free is either mistaken or hoping you are.
Which to buy
Buy travertine if the surface is a pool deck or patio in a warm state, you want texture and visible character, and barefoot comfort matters.
Buy limestone if the surface takes heavy traffic, needs crisp edges, sits in a freeze-thaw climate, or has to read as uniform. It is also the lower-freight choice across most of the country.
Buy neither if the surface is a kitchen counter that will meet lemon juice weekly and you are not prepared to live with etching. Granite or quartzite is the honest answer there.
